Tea Light Holders – Shining a Light on Any Occasion

Have you ever noticed that lighting a candle somehow seems like the appropriate thing to do for almost any situation?
Someone's birthday? Light a candle and make a wish.
An anniversary? Light a candle and create the atmosphere.
Want to remember someone special? Light a candle and quietly reflect.

There is just something about candlelight. It makes a moment feel more special.
And if the candle is important, shouldn't it have a holder that's just as special?
My Tea Light Holder Story
The first tealight holder I ever made was when I was just starting to play around with resin.
It was green, with gold glitter, designed to match my newly decorated front room. It wasn't exactly perfect. I hadn't mixed the resin properly and there were air bubbles.
(I promise I've improved a lot since then!)
But something happened when I put a tealight inside it and lit the candle.
Suddenly, I couldn't see the imperfections.
I could see the warm glow spreading across the room.
And that's when I realised just how much difference a little candlelight can make.
That first tealight holder might not have been perfect, but it started something. And I've been experimenting with colours, layers, inclusions and effects ever since.
When a Tea Light Holder Becomes the Perfect Gift
That's what I love about my tealight holders. They're not just functional. They bring colour, warmth and, dare I say it, a little elegance to a space.
And because each one can be personalised, they can become much more than something to put a candle in.
They can become a gift with a story behind it.
They're perfect when:

but you don't want to break the bank

Personalising a Tea Light Holder Is Simple
One of the things I love most about resin is the number of ways you can make a piece personal.
Add details.
For a wedding, add the bride and groom's initials and their wedding date to create a lasting reminder of a very special day.
Add mementos.
For a memory piece, small details such as dried petals, fur, ashes or sand can be incorporated into the design to capture a special person, pet or place.
Add meaningful words.
Celebrate a special event, personal achievement or lasting friendship with words that express love, support, congratulations or hope.
The result is something that isn't just made by hand.
It's made specifically for you.
Making a Tea Light Holder Is Not So Simple
As much as I love making them, tealight holders are definitely not a quick project.
To create the special effects and the beautiful glow that appears when a candle is lit, I build each holder in layers over several days.
Because the mould is filled from top to bottom, the first layer I pour becomes the surface that you see first. This is where any personal mementos are placed, carefully set into clear resin so they become part of the design.
If there aren't any mementos to include, I might use glitter, shiny stones or gold foil instead. The clear resin allows the candlelight to shine through, creating a sparkling effect.
Once that layer has fully cured, I can add the next one, usually the dominant colour. Then come the additional layers – matching, contrasting and clear shades – which build up the depth, colour and character of the finished piece.
And every layer has to be fully cured before the next one can be poured.
I've learned this lesson the hard way.
My impatience has resulted in a few ruined pieces !
Eventually, after all the layers have been poured and fully cured, it's time for the big reveal – unmoulding.
Deep breath.
Has it worked?
Will it look the way I imagined?
Have I managed to remove all those pesky bubbles?
Most of the time I'm really pleased with the result, and I can breathe again!
But I'm still not finished.
Any wording that has been requested will already have been printed, foiled and carefully cut out, ready to be added and sealed into the piece.
Then comes the sanding. The bottom needs to be carefully smoothed because the last thing I want is for a beautiful handmade tealight holder to scratch someone's table or shelf.
Finally, there is the polishing and buffing.
And then, after around a week of making, curing, sanding, polishing and occasionally holding my breath...
